    Come celebrate 18 years of genre-exploding musical exploits with Village Voice icon Greg “Ionman” Tate, monster groove bassist Jared Michael Nickerson and  Shelley Nicole, Mikel Banks, Lisala, Ben Tyree, Julie Brown, Micah Gaugh, LaFrae Sci, Lewis “Flip” Barnes, V. Jeffrey Smith, Avram Fefer, “Moist” Paula Henderson, Leon Gruenbaum, JS Williams, Andre Lassalle, Dave “Smoota” Smith, Bruce Mack, Mazz Swift, Swiss Chris & Abby Dobson and Chris Eddleton, the current crew of New York City’s Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber.

    The description “A multiracial jam army that freestyles with cool telekinesis between the lustrous menace of Miles Davis’s On The Corner, the slash-and-om of 1970s King Crimson, and Jimi Hendrix’s moonwalk across side three of Electric Ladyland” (David Fricke, Rolling Stone) provides a hint to the wide swath of the soul, jazz, hip-hop, rock, and avant-garde sonic spectrums BSA will unleash during this three-day event.

    For the first night of our eighteenth anniversary three-night celebration, the Burnt Sugar Arkestra will perform in its entirety … “Blood On The Leaf”, BSA’s debut & blueprint recording from 1999.   Being BSA’s “blueprint”, Nublu is the perfect venue to revisit BOTL as Ilhan Ersahin’s East Village establishment has developed and maintained a mad-fabulous reputation for encouraging sonic blueprints to breathe.  Point in fact, as the “lab” for Lawrence D. ‘Butch’ Morris’s Conduction® system which spawned the world-traveled, Conduction®-driven Nublu Orchestra, those two forces of sonic nature alone should be enough to let you know Wednesday, January 4th will be bad to the drone!

We’ll dip into our 2003 release “Black Sex & Random Violets” at our favorite “shake it loose, shake it lively” Harlem venue … Paris Blues!  Expect long jams of “Funky Rich Medina”, ” No Direction Home” and “Gibberish & Bushwack” to get your libation spilt while you get on your full boogie tilt!  Can you dig it … yes, yes … I know you can!

    Outpost in the Burbs presents “Sound & Vision The Music of David Bowie” an evening celebrating the enduring musical legacy of David Bowie featuring: Richard Barone, Jeffrey Gaines, Elvis Perkins, Wesley Stace, and the Burnt Sugar Arkestra.   The Montclair School of Rock House Band will open the show.

    Outpost in the Burbs is a non-profit outreach organization dedicated to building community  through music, community service, and cultural programs in Montclair New Jersey.  All ticket sales are final, no refunds or exchanges.  All tickets purchased day of show are subject to a higher charge

  • Afrofuturism Symposium presented by Connecticut College’s Department of Film Studies

    The symposium on November 4th will bring together the artistic and activist concerns of Afrofuturism, featuring three invited guests – Professor Robin James (UNC), Detroit-based activist, writer Adrienne Maree Brown, filmmaker M. Asli Dukan, and a direct action workshop, panels & papers by Connecticut College Students. There will be a library exhibit on Afrofuturism and Afrofuturist music playing throughout the day as well. Closing out the symposium the Burnt Sugar Arkestra will add Butch Morris’s structure & content modifying “Conduction” theory to the Afrofuturistic conversation with a ninety-minute live stellar-funk performance!

  • “Freedom Now” Details

    Cave Canem’s 20th anniversary and the Schomburg Center, for their year-long exploration of the Black Power Movement, will present  an inter-generational, interdisciplinary performance based on the musical composition of jazz composer and drummer Max Roach’s 1961 Freedom Now Suite. “Freedom Now!” will feature Cave Canem co-founders Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady and Black Arts Movement icon Sonia Sanchez, with a special appearance by New York City-based youth poets. The evening’s artistic director will be composer/performer and Cave Canem fellow Karma Mayet Johnson. Members of the  Burnt Sugar Arkestra Chamber will furnish the piece’s musical foundation.  Musicians and poets share the stage for the duration of the performance to deliver their own original compositions as well as excerpts of texts from Audre Lorde and Henry Dumas.
