  • More about Gavin Brown Enterprise & “Tomorrow Will Still Be Ours” A Festival of Visionary Arts, Ideas & Activism

    A bit about Gavin Brown Enterprise:  The gallery was established by Gavin Brown in 1994 on Broome Street, in the west Soho neighborhood of New York City.  The inaugural Broome street exhibition was by the British artist Steven Pippin. Pippin transformed the gallery space into a camera obscura, and in doing so quickly established the unconventional meter that has since become a defining characteristic of the gallery’s approach.

    Other early shows at GBE include a show of paintings by Peter Doig, Catherine Opie photographs, and a two-person show of works by Andy Warhol and Rirkrit Tiravanija.  After moves to the Meatpacking District and Greenwich Street in the West Village featuring the early works by the British painter Chris Ofili, installations by Martin Creed, the first show of work by Oliver Payne and Nick Relph, the first of artist Rob Pruitt’s famed “flea markets”, and Jonathan Horowitz’s exhibition “Obama ‘08”, in the summer of 2015 GBE moved to it’s current location in Harlem on West 127th Street with three floors of exhibition space. Movin on up indeed!

    After a three-night run at Nublu 151, Lincoln Center’s David Rubinstein Atrium and Harlem’s Paris Blues to start the year, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber continues their 18th anniversary celebration thanks to an invite from Kwame Binea (who’s upcoming release is produced by BSA family member Vernon Reid) to join his band Kwame Binea Shakedown and Josh David & Eric “The General” Toussaint’s Judah Tribe at a “hidden gem of a venue” American Beauty in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday, February 4th.

    A kaleidoscope of live, thought-provoking dance music at an easily accessible location with specialty cocktails, craft beers & free thin crust pizza with every drink purchased … what’s not to like!  Now that you know, mark your calendar and tell your friends to come along … ya heard!
