Led by Village Voice icon Greg “Ionman” Tate and  monster groove bassist Jared Michael Nickerson since 1999, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious personnel and adherence to Butch Morris’s “Conduction” system allows them to freely juggle a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip hop & rock spectrum.

With an alumni that includes Matana Roberts, Vijay Iyer, DJ Mutamassik, Okkyung Lee and Avram Feffer, Burnt Sugar has released fourteen recordings on their labels Tru Groidd & Avant Groidd Musica defining the art of creating scripted sounding music with the wave of a baton and hand gesture.

With the insistence of Melvin Van Peebles, Mikki Shepard, Bill Bragin, Leda Le Querrec and Vernon Reid, the Burnt Sugar Arkestra has spent the last three years performing the musics of Melvin Van Peebles, Miles Davis, James Brown, David Bowie, Steely Dan and Sun Ra in venues as disparate as The Apollo Theatre, The Stone, Sons d’hiver Festival in Paris France, Rikers Island Prison, Bryant Park, The Painted Bride, Real Art Ways and Lincoln Center.

Melvin Van Peebles had such a good time working with Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber bringing “Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song:The Hood Opera” to life on the Paris stage at the Sons d’hiver Festival in 2010, that he decided to continue the collaboration with the formation of his band ‘widLaxative.’

REBELLUM  is the 2013 ten-piece renegade splinter cell brain child of Greg Tate hacked from the recombinant corpus of the Burnt Sugar Arkestra and Melvin Van Peebles’ widLaxative, brought to life in Luqman Brown’s Harlem N.Y. Buddahbug Studios.

File under Grown&SexyAvant-Agit-Pop. The 20 songs on REBELLUM’s debut album “the Darknuss”  on their own label, AvantGroidd Musica/Tru Groidd, burst forth a bloody profusion of exotic trace elements–warped soul harmonies, freedom swing horn play, maggot brained guitar implosions and arkestral loopadelics in the dark.

REBELLUM’s song titles loudly & proudly represent the ranting swoon of their Afro-Futurist insurgency: ”Start Thinking like An Afreakun”, ”The Darknuss”, ”Rock Star Amnesiac”, ”Who’s Loving You Now?”, ”Chains & Water / No Coloureds Allowed”, ”There Is A God (The Singularity)”and ”Young Frankenstank”.

The spirits of Sun Ra, Ron Hardy, Eddie Hazel, Gary Numan and The Emotions are all welcome here.

Moist Paula is Turning 50 – Golden Jubilee Semi-Centennial Launch Party

Moist Paula's 50th BirthdayBurnt Sugar is moist pleased to be a part of Moist Paula’s 50th birthday celebration.
    We hope you’ll join us!

A note from the Birthday Goddess:

“Yes friends, it’s finally happening … I’m wrapping up my first semi-century on the planet and of course I’m going to celebrate by doing what I love to do most, playing bari sax all night with my beautiful loved ones in a venue that’s been very special to me for the last 17 years and which is closing its doors at the end of June 2013, Studio BPM NYC at 237 Kent Ave in Williamsburg.  I had my 40th birthday party there and many other birthdays too, so this Saturday will also be part of the Bye bye BPM series.

Most excitingly, Moisturizer is reforming for this occasion and will kick off the night’s festivities at 9pm; the second set of the night will be by Anderson Henderson White, a new trio of old friends, me, Rev. Vince Anderson & Jim White.  We all go way back. My 3rd set of the night will be with Burnt Sugar and if you’ve never experienced this magical music machine that I’ve been lucky enough to be part of for over 10 years, I’d consider it a birthday present if you would.   And I have a very strong feeling that the jamming will go on late which has always been the tradition at bpm.

Info is below, and if you like facebook, there’s an invite there:  www.facebook.com/events/488342277922486/

And if you’re on this list, thank you for being part of the first 50 years. I’m very excited about the next 50. “

With a hat tipped to Harlem’s Renaissance, Ginny’s Supper Club is a modern reincarnation of the glamorous speakeasies and Harlem nights of the Twenties – an intimate lounge with a warm bourbon glow and an even warmer welcome.

Kindled by the hottest live music, creative cocktails, soulful food, inclusive spirit and Harlem’s vibrant culture, Ginny’s is devoted to hosting nights out with a little bit of magic. And, as its creators chef Marcus Samuelsson and Andrew Chapman will tell you, that means style, culture and genuine down home fun for everyone.

“To reminisce about a place it needs to inspire you on many levels. When you’re captivated about incredible food, fun drinks, inspiring conversation, eclectic company and intoxicating music, you know you’ve had a great night out. Playing host to all those things is what gives Ginny’s its buzz.” Chef Marcus Samuelsson
