A Chicago native, Matt Kanelos studied classical and jazz piano at Chicago Musical College before moving to New York City. Matt’s lyrical stylings and minimalist musical aesthetic bring to mind influences like Neil Young, Bob Dylan , Leonard Cohen, and Cat Power. Performing regularly in New York, he has collaborated with Noe Venerable, Rose Polenzani, Jenifer Jackson, Roland Satterwhite, and Jason Liebman as well as members of Califone and Elysian Fileds. In 2008, Matt formed the band The Smooth Maria with Ben Gallina, Conor Meehan, and Kyle Sanna. Their first full length CD, ” Silent Show,” was released in May of 2009. MattKanelos.com

On June 12th and 13th 2010 boomBOOM Presents and Search & Restore unleash the Undead Jazz Festival on New York City. Hot off the success of Winter Jazzfest, these like-minded, ambitious concert presenters have revived the same two-day, many-artist, multi-venue formula. For two Summer nights, one ticket will give jazz fans access to Le Poisson Rouge, Kenny’s Castaways, and Sullivan Hall — three clubs with distinctly different aesthetics, reputations and histories, and all uniting to celebrate the many identities of jazz being created today in New York City.

As founders/producers of Undead, Brice Rosenbloom and Adam Schatz are on a mission to shake the tired image of jazz as a music of the past, a historical footnote, and worst of all, expensive. Jazz is a music of the people, and hinged on the exciting force of improvisation. The music can take on so many vibrant forms, each bringing a listener to a new place of enjoyment, euphoria and overall sonic stimulation. All of the 30+ groups participating in this festival bring improvisational personality, compositional agenda and unique ideas to the table. They have been consciously united for these two nights to centralize the jazz adventures that occur on a nightly basis in New York, and bring it all to a climax at three Greenwich Village clubs within one block of each other.

Undead is as much a festival for the fans of jazz’s developing history, as it is for those who have always wanted to know more about the music but do not know where to start. Whether or not you’ve heard of all or none of the 150+ musicians performing in the Undead Jazz Festival, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re there to let the music speed your pulse and blow your mind.

Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber will be making our first trip Portugal performing on the closing night of the 2010 edition of “Serralves em Festa” in Oporto.
The festival directors expect around 10,000 people to gather around the main stage in the park and the Sugar will hit them with JB’s FUNKY DIVAS VERSUS THE REVOLUTION OF THE MIND. A mash-up the albums, James Brown’s Live At The Apollo Volume 2, James Brown’s Revolution of the Mind & James Brown’s Funky Divas.

A 7ª edição do Serralves em Festa será encerrada com a actuação dos Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber que propõem um espectáculo de homenagem a James Brown. Esta banda americana de improvisação é uma das poucas que mescla as influências de funk, jazz, rock, reggae, soul, hip-hop, heavy metal e música clássica do século XX e todas as formas de expressão musical vocal e instrumental. O grupo foi formado em 1999 e mais de 40 músicos já passaram pela sua formação, que apesar de ser fluida se baseia sempre num núcleo de 12 músicos.

More likely you can come to the Blue Note’s Late Night Groove Series on Friday, May 28th and witness the Arkestra Chamber perform JB’s FUNKY DIVAS VERSUS THE REVOLUTION OF THE MIND, a musical mash-up of the albums, James Brown Live At The Apollo Volume 2, James Brown’s The Revolution of the Mind and James Brown’s Funky Divas.

The JB-edition of Burnt Sugar is a very accomplished crew with playing credits ranging from Cyro Baptistas, Wadada Leo Smith, Claudio Roditi, David Murray and Joseph Bowie, to TV On The Radio, Vernon Reid, the Holmes Brothers, William Parker, Fela on Broadway, The The and Phish. Anchored by the pop and sizzle rhythm section of Jared Michael Nickerson (electric bass) and Chris Eddleton (drums), the ghetto mysticism vocals of Karma Mayet Johnson, Mikel Banks, Mazz Swift (violin), Lewis “Flip” Barnes Jr. (trumpet), Bruce Mack (synthesizer), the drop-step precision of Avram Fefer (tenor sax), “Moist” Paula Henderson (baritone sax), Dave Smith (trombone), Greg Tate (guitar) and André Lassalle (guitar).

As the story goes …from a humble beginning of only two theaters and a torrent of negative reviews, “Sweet Sweetback’s Baasasssss Song” eventually mushroomed to domestic box office receipts of $10,000,000.00 and landed on Daily Variety’s list of top-grossing films for the year 1971. Incidentally Sweet Sweetback was the largest grossing independent film up to that time with it’s success kick-starting what became known as the Blaxplotation film movement.

Not as well documented is that Earth Wind and Fire performed the musical soundtrack on Sweetback. Here, thirty-nine years later, Mr. Melvin Van Peebles, the producer, writer, director, composer, editor and star of Sweet Sweetback has chosen Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber to be his 23rd-century Earth Wind and Fire.

The Arkestra Chamber will perform the soundtrack live, on-stage, for the theatrical world premiere of “Sweet Sweetback’s Baddass Song (The Hood Opera)” at the Sons d’hiver Festival in Paris, France on February 19th and 20th, 2010.

Witness the next step in the evolution of The Arkestra Chamber as “Pass the Baton” makes its NYC area debut at York College’s Performing Art Center on Friday, November 13.

Road tested in Chicago, Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware; “Pass the Baton” is Greg Tate’s latest brain-child. With the pass of a baton, conduction duties are shared between members of the band.

During this performance, the baton will be passed between Lewis “Flip” Barnes Jr., Karma Mayet Johnson, Micah Gaugh and Mikel Banks.
